Bioadhesion
Bioadhesion describes the attachment of a synthetic or natural macromolecule to an epithelial/mucosal surface and has been exploited pharmaceutically to manipulate drug bioavailability. It allows the attachment of a drug carrier system to a target biological surface and enhances drug delivery as:
- Drug residence time at the site of absorption is prolonged
- The drug concentration gradient across the tissue is increased
- Tissue permeability may be modified
- Protection from metabolising enzymes can occur
Technostics have established an international reputation for the design, testing and optimisation of bioadhesive dosage forms. We have collaborated with a number of major pharmaceutical companies and co-developed novel bioadhesive systems for targeted drug delivery to the oesophageal, buccal, nasal, rectal and vaginal mucosa.
